Early Carboniferous Fossils
The carboniferous lasted roughly from 359 to 299 million years ago. These fossils are from Asbian Ravensworth scar and Knipe scar Great Limestone. Dating from the Visean stage of the Middle Mississippian. The Asbian formation was laid down over a period of 3.4 million years, from 339.4 to 336.0 million years ago.
Sunlit tidal shallows were tropical in character and home to corals, benthic molluscs and echinoderms. Sharks cruised the shallows to snap up fish.
